ConfigMgr MOF Snipplets Available

What's new since 1.0?

9-10-2008 v1.3 - Added to 16-McAfeeEPO
9-1-2008 v1.2 - Added to 19-PhysicalMemory
8-26-2008 v1.1 - Added 37-HardDriveSerialNumber

If you are new to ConfigMgr, by adding specifically formatted entries to the two text files contained in inboxes\clifiles.src\hinv--sms_def.mof, and configuration.mof--you can instruct your ConfigMgr clients to report additional information from either the registry or WMI. The one main caveat is that HKeyCurrentUser keys cannot be gathered. To start using these snippets, decide if you need them. Although for most of these MOF Snippets the impact is minimal, the more you have the larger your database grows. Some snippets require external scripts run as a recurring advertisement in order to populate WMI. Some MOF snippets are included simply because they were in the SMS 2.0/2003 MOF snippets available at SCCMExpert.com. For example, the mof snippet to gather information on Dreamweaver version 7 is likely not that interesting... since Dreamweaver is now at version 9, and version 10 is already in beta.

New DataShift Method Available

For the first time ever the DataShift scripts have been compiled into one executable. The new Datashift executable can be distributed with SMS or run as a stand alone. As before your SMS_DEF.MOF requires a class be created in order for hardware inventory to report the new WMI data. The DataShift VB scripts are still available for download.

How do DataShift and MIFShift Scripts differ?

DataShift – This version takes the information and creates a new WMI class. You need to modify your SMS_DEF.MOF to collect the information via hardware inventory.

MIFShift – Instead of creating a new class in WMI, these scripts use the old fashion method of writing to a NOIDMIF file. When the next hardware inventory runs the file will be picked up and inserted into inventory.

What is the end result?

Using either method the data collected via inventory will appear in the SMS MCC Resource Explorer under the hardware section. The data collected will be viewable under the SMX_Function table.

Use WQL or SQL queries to create a report based on the information collected.

Windows Defrag Scripts And Reports

Thanks to Jase Wolfe and Dx21 we are offering a download that automatucally defrags hard drives utilizing SMS 2003. The download includes a MOF Edit to collect the defrag information and a defrag web repot ready to import. Jase's original articles contain instructions and are included in the download.
